Private key

The secret number that controls a crypto address. Never share it.

Definition

In depth

A private key is the secret cryptographic number that authorizes spending from a blockchain address. Whoever holds the private key controls the funds — there is no password reset. Most wallets show it as a 12-or-24-word seed phrase rather than the raw key.
